📖 読解文章

The introduction of the electric vehicle (EV) has been hailed as a major step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, a closer examination reveals that EVs may not be as environmentally beneficial as they appear. First, the production of lithium-ion batteries, a core component of EVs, requires the extraction of lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These mining processes are energy-intensive and often occur in regions with lax environmental regulations, leading to significant carbon emissions and habitat destruction. For example, lithium mining in South America's salt flats consumes vast amounts of water, depleting local aquifers and harming ecosystems. Second, the electricity used to charge EVs often comes from coal or natural gas power plants. In many countries, the grid still relies heavily on fossil fuels, so the overall carbon footprint of an EV over its lifetime may be only marginally lower than that of a conventional gasoline car. Third, the disposal of EV batteries poses a serious environmental challenge. These batteries contain toxic materials that can leach into soil and groundwater if not properly recycled, and current recycling rates are low due to high costs and technical difficulties. Consequently, the environmental advantages of EVs are overstated, and policymakers should reconsider their promotion of this technology.
