The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago, has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that a series of massive volcanic eruptions in the Deccan Traps of India may have been the primary cause. Three main arguments support this volcanic hypothesis. First, the Deccan Traps eruptions released enormous quantities of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide over a period of roughly 500,000 years, leading to severe climate changes—acid rain, global cooling followed by warming—that could have stressed ecosystems long before the asteroid struck. Fossil records show a decline in dinosaur diversity in the last few hundred thousand years of the Cretaceous, which aligns with the onset of these eruptions. Second, geochemical analyses of sediments from the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary reveal that the iridium layer—often cited as evidence of an asteroid—is not a single sharp spike but is spread over several centimeters, suggesting multiple pulses of iridium that could have come from deep mantle sources via volcanism rather than a single impact. Third, the timing of the Deccan eruptions, which peaked at or just before the K-Pg boundary, matches the extinction event more precisely than the asteroid impact, which occurred at the boundary itself; some paleontologists argue that the impact merely delivered the final blow to ecosystems already on the brink of collapse due to volcanic stress.

The lecture challenges the volcanic hypothesis presented in the reading. While the Deccan eruptions were indeed massive, their role as the primary cause of dinosaur extinction is dubious. First, the decline in dinosaur diversity before the K-Pg boundary is not necessarily linked to volcanic activity. Fossil records are incomplete, and the apparent decline may reflect sampling biases or regional environmental changes, not a global crisis. In fact, recent studies show that dinosaur populations were stable until the very end of the Cretaceous. Second, the spread iridium layer can be explained by sediment mixing and bioturbation after the asteroid impact, not by multiple volcanic pulses. Moreover, the iridium concentration in the Deccan basalts is far too low—about 100 times less than what is found in the K-Pg boundary layer—making volcanic origin geochemically implausible. Third, the timing argument is flawed: high-precision radiometric dating places the main extinction event at exactly 66.04 million years ago, coinciding with the Chicxulub impact, whereas the Deccan eruptions show a complex history with their most intense phase occurring about 300,000 years after the extinction, meaning they could not have caused it. The impact, not volcanism, remains the only event that can account for the sudden, global nature of the extinction.
