The extinction of the woolly mammoth has long been attributed to a combination of climate change and human hunting. However, a recent theory proposes that a catastrophic comet impact around 12,800 years ago was the primary cause. This theory, known as the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, suggests that a fragmented comet struck the Earth, triggering a sudden cooling period and widespread wildfires. Three key pieces of evidence support this claim. First, a distinct layer of sediment, rich in iridium and nanodiamonds, has been found at many sites across North America, dating precisely to this time. These materials are rare on Earth's surface but common in extraterrestrial objects, indicating a cosmic collision. Second, the extinction event coincides with the disappearance of a unique type of microscopic charcoal, called 'spherules,' which are formed only under extreme heat and pressure, consistent with an impact. Third, the rapid decline of mammoth populations, along with other megafauna like saber-toothed cats, occurred within a very short timeframe, geologically speaking, which is more consistent with a sudden catastrophic event than with gradual climate shifts or hunting pressure.
