The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, is often celebrated as a period of unprecedented technological and economic progress. However, a closer examination reveals that its overall impact on human welfare was largely negative. First, the revolution worsened living conditions for the working class. Rapid urbanization led to overcrowded, unsanitary housing in industrial cities, with inadequate ventilation and clean water. Workers, including children, endured long hours in dangerous factories, leading to widespread disease and high mortality rates. Second, it increased economic inequality. While factory owners amassed vast fortunes, laborers received minimal wages, barely enough to survive. The gap between the rich and poor widened dramatically, as evidenced by the rise of slums alongside opulent mansions. Third, the revolution caused severe environmental degradation. Coal-powered factories emitted thick smoke and soot, polluting the air and water. Deforestation accelerated to fuel furnaces, and rivers became contaminated with industrial waste, harming both human health and local ecosystems. These negative consequences, though often overlooked, outweigh the benefits of increased production and technological innovation.
