The extinction of the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America, is often attributed solely to overhunting. However, recent research suggests that a combination of factors, including deforestation and a low reproductive rate, were equally critical. First, deforestation destroyed the bird's primary nesting habitat. Passenger pigeons nested in dense, mature forests, primarily in the northeastern United States and southern Canada. As logging expanded in the late 19th century, these forests were cleared for agriculture and timber, leaving pigeons with fewer and smaller breeding areas. Second, the species had an extremely low reproductive rate. Unlike many birds that lay multiple clutches per year, passenger pigeons laid only one egg per nesting attempt. This slow reproduction meant that even moderate losses from hunting could quickly outpace the population's ability to recover. Third, the social nature of the pigeons exacerbated their decline. They nested in massive, dense colonies, sometimes covering hundreds of square miles. This made them highly vulnerable to synchronized disturbances, such as a single severe storm or a disease outbreak, which could wipe out an entire generation of chicks in one event. While overhunting was certainly a major factor, these additional pressures—habitat loss, low fecundity, and social aggregation—were essential in driving the species to extinction by 1914.
