The construction of large-scale hydroelectric dams has long been considered a cornerstone of sustainable energy development. Proponents argue that dams provide a clean, reliable source of power while also offering secondary benefits such as flood control and irrigation. However, a closer examination reveals that hydroelectric dams are not as beneficial as they appear, and their drawbacks often outweigh their advantages. Three main arguments support this critical view. First, dams are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, which is released when organic matter decomposes in the flooded reservoirs. Studies in tropical regions, such as the Amazon, have shown that methane emissions from reservoirs can be comparable to those of fossil fuel power plants over a 20-year period. Second, the displacement of local communities is a severe social cost. The construction of large dams, such as China's Three Gorges Dam, has forced over a million people to relocate, leading to loss of livelihoods, cultural disruption, and long-term psychological trauma. Third, dams often fail to deliver their promised economic benefits. The high construction costs, combined with sedimentation that reduces reservoir capacity over time, mean that many dams become less efficient and require expensive maintenance, making them financially unviable in the long run. These factors suggest that governments should reconsider investing in large hydroelectric projects and instead focus on alternative renewable energy sources like solar and wind.
