📖 읽기 지문

The introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) has been hailed as a major step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, a closer examination reveals that EVs may not be as environmentally beneficial as commonly claimed. First, the production of EV batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, requires mining rare metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. This mining process is highly energy-intensive and often occurs in regions with lax environmental regulations, leading to significant habitat destruction, water pollution, and carbon emissions. Second, the electricity used to charge EVs often comes from coal or natural gas power plants, especially in developing countries. When the entire lifecycle is considered, an EV charged with fossil-fuel-based electricity can produce more carbon dioxide per mile than a conventional gasoline vehicle. Third, the disposal and recycling of EV batteries pose serious environmental challenges. These batteries contain toxic materials that can leach into soil and groundwater if not properly managed, and current recycling rates are low due to high costs and technical difficulties. Therefore, while EVs may reduce tailpipe emissions, their overall environmental impact could be worse than that of traditional vehicles.
