📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

The extinction of the megafauna—large animals such as mammoths, giant sloths, and saber-toothed cats—at the end of the Pleistocene has long puzzled scientists. While climate change and human hunting are often cited, a less-discussed factor is the role of ancient viral pathogens. This essay argues that a hypervirulent virus, transmitted through shared water sources, was the primary driver of these extinctions. First, the timing of megafaunal declines correlates with the spread of a specific viral strain, as evidenced by viral DNA fragments found in permafrost-preserved bones. Second, many extinct species, despite being ecologically diverse, shared similar physiological traits—such as slow reproduction and low genetic diversity—that made them uniquely susceptible to a pathogen that targeted immune-system proteins. Third, the survival of smaller animals and certain megafauna like bison, which have robust immune responses, supports the viral hypothesis, as these species would have been less vulnerable to the same pathogen. In contrast, climate and hunting theories fail to explain why species with similar habitats and body sizes experienced vastly different extinction rates.
