The widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides has been linked to the decline of bee populations, but recent research suggests that these chemicals may also pose a significant threat to bird species. While the direct toxicity of neonicotinoids to birds is relatively low, their impact on avian populations is primarily indirect, through the reduction of insect prey. First, neonicotinoids are systemic, meaning they are absorbed by plants and expressed in pollen and nectar. This leads to a drastic reduction in insect populations, particularly pollinators and other beneficial insects, which are crucial food sources for many bird species, especially during breeding season when chicks require protein-rich diets. Second, the loss of insect biomass forces insectivorous birds to switch to less nutritious seeds or lower-quality food sources, which can lead to malnutrition, reduced fledgling survival, and lower overall reproductive success. Third, neonicotinoids can persist in soil and water, entering the food chain through earthworms and other invertebrates consumed by ground-feeding birds. This chronic exposure may cause sublethal effects, such as impaired immune function and reduced navigational ability, which can increase mortality during migration. Therefore, the use of neonicotinoids poses a serious, yet underestimated, threat to avian biodiversity.
