The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that intense volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps of India was the primary cause. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Geochemical dating shows that the main phase of volcanic activity began about 66 million years ago, just before the mass extinction, and continued for roughly 500,000 years. In contrast, the Chicxulub impact occurred at the exact boundary, but its effects were short-lived, making it less likely to cause a prolonged extinction. Second, volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide would have caused severe climate changes, including rapid cooling followed by long-term warming, which could have stressed ecosystems globally. The impact, while catastrophic locally, would have had a more limited global climatic effect. Finally, the fossil record reveals that dinosaur populations were already declining well before the impact, likely due to volcanic-induced environmental stress. This gradual decline suggests that the impact merely delivered the final blow to an already vulnerable group of species.
