The extinction of the giant ground sloth (Megatherium) in North America around 11,000 years ago has long puzzled scientists. While many blame human overhunting, recent evidence suggests that climate change and other factors were more critical. Three main arguments support this view. First, the timing of the sloth’s disappearance does not align with human arrival. Fossil records indicate that sloth populations declined sharply after the last Ice Age, well before the widespread Clovis hunting culture appeared. If humans were the primary cause, extinction should have coincided with the spread of these hunters. Second, sloth anatomy and behavior made them unlikely prey. These animals were massive, slow-moving, and possibly defended by thick skin and claws, but they were also solitary and may have inhabited dense forests, making them difficult to hunt with primitive weapons. Archaeological sites contain few sloth bones with cut marks, unlike other megafauna such as mammoths. Third, a sudden warming event, known as the Younger Dryas onset, caused drastic vegetation shifts. Sloths were specialized browsers, relying on specific trees and shrubs. As forests gave way to grasslands, their food sources collapsed, leading to malnutrition and reproductive decline. Pollen and plant fossil data confirm a rapid loss of preferred sloth habitats at this time. Thus, climate-induced habitat loss, not human hunting, best explains their demise.
