The widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides has been linked to the decline of bee populations, but a more controversial factor has recently emerged: the impact of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from mobile phone towers. A growing body of research suggests that EMFs disrupt bee navigation and foraging behavior, ultimately threatening colony survival. First, bees rely on the Earth’s magnetic field for orientation during long-distance flights. Laboratory studies have shown that exposure to low-frequency EMFs, similar to those emitted by phone towers, causes bees to lose their ability to detect magnetic north, leading to disorientation and failure to return to the hive. Second, EMFs may impair bees’ learning and memory, which are crucial for recognizing floral cues and communicating through the waggle dance. In controlled experiments, bees exposed to EMFs took significantly longer to learn the association between a color and a food reward, and they also produced more erroneous waggle dances, reducing foraging efficiency. Third, chronic EMF exposure appears to weaken bees’ immune systems, making them more susceptible to pathogens such as the deformed wing virus. A field study near a high-density antenna area reported higher viral loads in bees compared with those in rural areas with low EMF levels. These combined effects—disorientation, cognitive deficits, and immunosuppression—pose a serious, underappreciated threat to pollinator health.
