The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps eruptions in India, played a more significant role. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating places the main phase of eruptions at 66.3 to 66.0 million years ago, overlapping with the extinction at 66.0 million years ago. This temporal correlation suggests that volcanic activity, not an impact, was the primary driver. Second, volcanic emissions would have caused severe environmental stress. The Deccan Traps released vast quantities of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, leading to acid rain, global cooling from sulfate aerosols, and subsequent warming from greenhouse gases. These climatic fluctuations would have disrupted ecosystems over hundreds of thousands of years, matching the gradual decline observed in fossil records before the final extinction. Third, the impact theory has weaknesses. The Chicxulub crater in Mexico is dated to 66.0 million years ago, but impact models predict a sudden mass extinction, yet many species declined gradually over a longer period. Moreover, similar impact craters elsewhere do not correlate with mass extinctions, indicating that impacts alone are insufficient to cause such catastrophic biological turnover. Therefore, the Deccan Traps volcanism, with its prolonged and severe environmental effects, is a more plausible cause of dinosaur extinction.

The reading argues that volcanic activity caused dinosaur extinction, but this view is deeply flawed. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps is not as precise as claimed. While the main eruptions began around 66.3 million years ago, the most intense volcanic phase occurred after the extinction event, around 65.5 million years ago. The extinction happened abruptly at 66.0 million years ago, coinciding exactly with the Chicxulub impact, not with the peak of volcanic activity. Second, volcanic emissions from the Deccan Traps, though substantial, were spread over a long period, making their climatic impact less severe than the reading suggests. In contrast, the Chicxulub impact released energy equivalent to billions of atomic bombs in a matter of minutes, vaporizing rock and ejecting dust that blocked sunlight globally, causing a sudden and catastrophic collapse of photosynthesis. This rapid disruption matches the fossil record showing a sharp and immediate extinction at the boundary layer. Third, the reading's claim that impacts do not correlate with mass extinctions ignores the unique circumstances of Chicxulub. This impact struck sulfate-rich limestone, releasing sulfate aerosols that caused a prolonged 'impact winter,' a mechanism not present in smaller or non-sulfate impacts. Additionally, the gradual decline observed in some species can be attributed to the long-term volcanic activity, but the final kill mechanism was the impact. The thin layer of iridium found globally at the boundary is a clear fingerprint of an asteroid, not volcanism. Thus, the impact theory remains the strongest explanation, and volcanism only played a supporting role, not the primary cause.
