The extinction of the woolly mammoth has long been a subject of scientific debate. While some researchers attribute it to climate change or human hunting, a recent hypothesis proposes that a catastrophic comet impact was the primary cause. This theory rests on three main arguments. First, proponents point to the discovery of nanodiamonds—tiny particles formed under extreme heat and pressure—in sediment layers dating to roughly 12,800 years ago, coinciding with the mammoth’s decline. These nanodiamonds are considered a signature of an extraterrestrial impact. Second, they cite the presence of a distinct “black mat” layer of organic-rich soil found at many archaeological sites across North America, which they argue resulted from widespread fires ignited by the impact. Third, the theory suggests that the impact triggered a rapid cooling event, known as the Younger Dryas, which drastically altered the mammoth’s grassland habitat, leading to starvation and extinction. Together, these lines of evidence are used to argue that a single cosmic event, rather than gradual environmental or human factors, drove the mammoth to extinction.
