The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps eruptions in India, was the primary cause. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating indicates that the main phase of eruptions began about 66 million years ago, just before the extinction, and continued for roughly 1 million years. In contrast, the Chicxulub impact occurred at the exact boundary, but its effects were short-lived (only a few years to decades), whereas volcanic emissions would have caused prolonged environmental stress. Second, volcanic eruptions release vast amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, leading to acid rain, global cooling followed by warming, and ocean acidification. These chemical effects match the observed patterns of selective extinction, where marine organisms with calcium carbonate shells were particularly hard hit. Finally, the fossil record shows a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity over the last few million years of the Cretaceous, consistent with the long-term, cumulative stress from volcanic activity, rather than a sudden, catastrophic impact.
