📖 読解文章

The extinction of large terrestrial mammals, such as woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats, at the end of the Pleistocene epoch has long puzzled scientists. While climate change and human hunting are often cited, a less considered factor is the sudden increase in ultraviolet (UV) radiation due to a cosmic event. This theory proposes that a comet or asteroid impact around 12,800 years ago, known as the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, triggered a global environmental crisis. First, the impact would have ejected massive amounts of dust and aerosols into the stratosphere, partially destroying the ozone layer. This would allow harmful UV-B radiation to reach the Earth's surface, causing widespread skin cancers, cataracts, and reduced plant productivity, directly harming large herbivores and their predators. Second, the impact would have caused a rapid cooling event, as the dust blocked solar radiation, leading to a dramatic shift in vegetation. Large mammals, adapted to warmer grasslands, would have faced food scarcity and habitat fragmentation. Third, the cosmic event would have produced toxic levels of heavy metals, such as platinum and iridium, in the soil and water. These contaminants would have accumulated in the food chain, causing reproductive failures and immune system suppression in megafauna, ultimately driving them to extinction.
