The concept of 'biodegradable plastics' has been widely promoted as a solution to the global plastic pollution crisis. However, a closer examination reveals that these materials are not the environmental panacea they are claimed to be. Three main arguments support this skepticism. First, biodegradable plastics often require specific industrial composting conditions—high temperatures, humidity, and microbial activity—to break down effectively. In natural environments like oceans or landfills, these conditions are rarely met, meaning the plastics may persist for decades, fragmenting into microplastics that harm marine life. Second, the production of biodegradable plastics is not necessarily more sustainable than conventional plastics. Many are derived from agricultural crops like corn or sugarcane, which demand large amounts of water, fertilizer, and land, leading to deforestation and food price increases. Third, the labeling of products as 'biodegradable' creates a false sense of security among consumers, encouraging them to litter or improperly dispose of waste, assuming it will naturally decompose. This behavioral impact could undermine recycling efforts and exacerbate pollution, as people may not feel the need to recycle or reduce single-use plastics.
