The discovery of a large number of fossilized dinosaur bones in a single location, often called a bonebed, has been used by paleontologists to infer that dinosaurs were social animals that lived in herds. This conclusion is based on three main lines of evidence. First, the sheer number of individuals found together suggests that the animals died simultaneously, which would only happen if they were traveling as a group. For example, the famous Albertosaurus bonebed in Canada contains the remains of over 20 individuals, all preserved in the same layer of sediment. Second, the age distribution of the fossils—many juveniles and adults but few very young or very old individuals—is consistent with a living herd, where young adults are most common. Third, the spatial arrangement of the bones, with carcasses scattered over a large area rather than piled in a single heap, indicates a mass death event, such as a flood or drought, that overwhelmed an entire herd at once. These interpretations have led to a widely accepted view that many dinosaur species, especially large theropods and ornithopods, exhibited complex social behaviors similar to modern mammals and birds.
