The construction of large dams has long been considered a cornerstone of modern water management, providing hydroelectric power, irrigation, and flood control. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that dams are not the unmitigated blessing they were once thought to be. This essay argues that the negative consequences of large dams outweigh their benefits, and that we should reconsider our reliance on them. Three key reasons support this position. First, dams cause significant environmental damage. They disrupt natural river flows, trapping sediments that are essential for downstream ecosystems, and altering water temperatures, which can harm native fish species. For example, the construction of the Aswan High Dam in Egypt has reduced the fertility of the Nile Delta by blocking nutrient-rich silt, leading to soil degradation and a decline in coastal fisheries. Second, dams often lead to the displacement of local communities. The creation of reservoirs requires the flooding of vast areas, forcing thousands of people to relocate, often without adequate compensation or resettlement plans. The Three Gorges Dam in China, for instance, displaced over 1.3 million people, causing social disruption and cultural loss. Third, dams are not a reliable long-term solution for water security due to sedimentation. Over time, reservoirs fill with silt, gradually reducing their storage capacity and making them less effective for flood control and irrigation. This process can shorten a dam’s lifespan to just a few decades, undermining the initial investment. Given these environmental, social, and practical drawbacks, it is clear that we must explore alternative strategies for water management, such as groundwater recharge and decentralized rainwater harvesting.
