The extinction of the megafauna—large animals such as mammoths, giant sloths, and saber-toothed cats—at the end of the Pleistocene epoch has long puzzled scientists. While many factors have been proposed, the most compelling explanation is human overhunting, known as the 'Pleistocene overkill' hypothesis. First, the timing of extinctions closely correlates with the arrival of humans on different continents. In North America, for example, the megafauna disappeared roughly 13,000 years ago, just after the Clovis people, known for their distinctive stone spear points, appeared. In Australia, extinctions followed human colonization by a few thousand years. Second, archaeological evidence supports direct hunting: kill sites with butchered mammoth bones and Clovis points have been excavated, indicating that early humans actively pursued and killed these animals. Third, the megafauna were especially vulnerable to hunting due to their life history traits—they had long gestation periods, small litter sizes, and extended parental care, meaning populations could not recover quickly from even modest levels of human predation. Together, these lines of evidence strongly suggest that human hunters were the primary driver of the megafaunal extinctions.
