📖 読解文章

The extinction of large terrestrial mammals, such as woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats, at the end of the Pleistocene epoch has long puzzled scientists. While climate change and human hunting are often cited, a less considered factor is the impact of a comet or asteroid impact. This theory, known as the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, posits that a cosmic impact around 12,900 years ago triggered a rapid cooling event and widespread environmental disruption, leading to the demise of megafauna. Three lines of evidence support this hypothesis. First, a distinct sedimentary layer dating to this period contains high concentrations of iridium, a rare element in Earth's crust but common in asteroids and comets. Second, microscopic spherules and nanodiamonds—materials formed under extreme heat and pressure—have been found in this same layer, suggesting a high-energy impact event. Third, the timing of the megafaunal extinctions in North America coincides remarkably with the proposed impact date, with fossil records showing a sudden disappearance of many large species around 12,900 years ago. Thus, the cosmic impact theory offers a compelling explanation for the abrupt and selective extinction of these animals.
