📖 Reading Passage

The introduction of wind energy as a primary source of power has been widely advocated as a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Proponents argue that wind power offers significant environmental, economic, and practical advantages. First, wind energy is environmentally friendly because it produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. Unlike coal or natural gas plants, wind turbines do not burn fuel, so they contribute minimally to climate change and air pollution. Second, wind power is economically beneficial in the long term. Although initial construction costs are high, the operational costs are low because wind is free and requires no ongoing fuel purchases. Over time, this leads to reduced electricity prices for consumers and greater energy independence for nations that lack fossil fuel reserves. Third, wind farms can be built on existing agricultural or grazing land without displacing other land uses. Farmers and ranchers can continue to grow crops or raise livestock around the turbines, allowing for dual use of land and providing additional income through lease payments. These advantages suggest that wind energy should be a cornerstone of future energy policies.
