The introduction of non-native species into new environments is often viewed as a threat to biodiversity, but in certain cases, it can yield significant ecological and economic benefits. One such example is the introduction of the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) into North American freshwater systems. This species, despite being invasive, offers three major advantages. First, Asian clams are highly efficient filter feeders, capable of clarifying water by removing suspended algae and particulates. Studies in the San Francisco Bay Delta have shown that where Asian clams are abundant, water turbidity decreases by up to 40%, improving light penetration and promoting the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation, which provides habitat for native fish. Second, the clams serve as a plentiful food source for native predators, including diving ducks, raccoons, and some fish species. In the Hudson River, researchers have observed that populations of the native blue crab have increased in areas where Asian clams are dense, suggesting a positive trophic interaction. Third, the economic value of commercial clam harvesting cannot be ignored. In the southeastern United States, the Asian clam fishery generates over $15 million annually, supporting local economies and providing jobs in rural communities. These benefits indicate that not all introductions are detrimental; rather, they can enhance ecosystem function and human welfare.

The reading presents a rosy picture of the Asian clam, but its claims are misleading and overlook serious negative impacts. First, while Asian clams do filter water, this process also removes phytoplankton that form the base of the aquatic food web. In the San Francisco Bay Delta, the clams have reduced phytoplankton biomass by over 60%, outcompeting native filter feeders like the delta smelt, which have suffered population declines. The clearer water the reading celebrates actually leads to a less productive ecosystem, not a healthier one. Second, the claim that native predators benefit is not supported by evidence. Blue crabs in the Hudson River may coexist with clams, but their increase is more likely due to other factors, such as reduced fishing pressure. In fact, Asian clams have thick shells and reproduce rapidly, making them an unreliable food source; they do not replace the native mussels that predators historically relied upon, and their dominance has caused native mussel populations to collapse. Third, the economic argument is flawed. The 'commercial harvest' of Asian clams is largely unregulated and low-value, often sold as bait rather than for human consumption. Meanwhile, the invasive clams clog intake pipes at power plants and water treatment facilities, costing utilities millions of dollars annually in maintenance and repairs. In sum, the costs of this introduction far outweigh any minor benefits.
