📖 読解文章

The introduction of the electric vehicle (EV) has been hailed as a major step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. However, a closer examination reveals that the widespread adoption of EVs may not be as environmentally beneficial as commonly assumed. Three primary concerns undermine the case for EVs as a sustainable solution. First, the production of EV batteries is highly resource-intensive. Lithium, cobalt, and nickel are mined through processes that consume vast amounts of water and energy, often in regions with lax environmental regulations. The extraction of these metals leads to habitat destruction, soil contamination, and significant carbon emissions. Studies estimate that manufacturing a single EV battery can produce up to 70% more carbon dioxide than manufacturing a conventional internal combustion engine. Second, the electricity used to charge EVs often comes from fossil fuels. In many countries, coal and natural gas still dominate the energy grid. When an EV is charged with electricity generated from coal, its overall carbon footprint can be higher than that of a comparable gasoline-powered car. Even in regions with cleaner grids, the timing of charging—often during peak demand hours—can force utilities to rely on additional fossil fuel plants. Finally, the disposal and recycling of EV batteries pose a serious environmental hazard. Lithium-ion batteries contain toxic materials that can leach into soil and groundwater if not properly managed. Current recycling rates for these batteries are low, and the recycling process itself is energy-intensive and expensive. Without effective recycling infrastructure, the environmental burden of EVs will persist for decades after their useful life.
