📖 読解文章

The extinction of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) at the end of the Pleistocene has long been debated. While some scientists argue that human hunting was the primary cause, others propose that climate change or a combination of factors drove their demise. This passage examines three key pieces of evidence supporting the overhunting hypothesis. First, archaeological sites across North America and Eurasia show a clear temporal overlap between the arrival of human populations and the decline of mammoth populations. For instance, at the Clovis sites in North America, dated to approximately 13,000 years ago, mammoth bones have been found alongside distinctive spear points, suggesting active hunting. Second, the life history traits of mammoths—such as a long gestation period and extended parental care—made them particularly vulnerable to hunting pressure. Unlike smaller, faster-reproducing species, mammoths would have required decades to recover from even modest levels of human predation. Third, the rapid extinction of mammoths on isolated islands, such as Wrangel Island, correlates with the first evidence of human settlement on those islands, not with significant climate shifts. This pattern strongly implies that human activity, not environmental change, was the decisive factor.
