The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a closer examination of the fossil record and geological evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps in India, was the primary driver of this mass extinction. Three main arguments support this volcanic hypothesis. First, the Deccan Traps eruptions began well before the asteroid impact, approximately 66 million years ago, and lasted for over a million years. This prolonged volcanic activity would have released vast amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, causing severe climate change, including acid rain and global cooling followed by warming, which could have stressed ecosystems long before the asteroid struck. Second, the fossil record shows a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity and abundance in the millions of years leading up to the extinction event. This pattern is inconsistent with a sudden catastrophic impact but aligns with the slow, cumulative effects of volcanic emissions. Third, the Deccan Traps are associated with the eruption of flood basalts, which created extensive lava flows that would have destroyed habitats directly, while also triggering secondary effects such as ocean acidification and ozone depletion. Together, these volcanic processes could have created a 'one-two punch' that pushed many species to the brink, making the asteroid impact merely the final blow rather than the main cause.

The lecture challenges the volcanic hypothesis presented in the reading. While it is true that the Deccan Traps eruptions were significant, the timing and intensity of these eruptions do not match the extinction pattern. First, recent high-precision dating shows that the most voluminous phase of the Deccan Traps eruptions occurred approximately 300,000 years after the asteroid impact, not before. This suggests that the major volcanic activity was a consequence of the impact, as seismic waves may have triggered increased magma flow. Thus, the volcanic eruptions could not have been the primary cause because they peaked after the extinction event. Second, the claim of a gradual dinosaur decline is not supported by the most recent fossil analyses. Studies of dinosaur eggshells and bone beds from the late Cretaceous reveal that dinosaurs were thriving and diverse right up to the impact layer. The apparent decline in some regions may be due to sampling bias or local environmental changes, not a global trend. Third, while volcanic gases can cause climate disruption, the estimated sulfur and carbon emissions from the Deccan Traps, even in their most intense phase, were likely insufficient to cause a global mass extinction on their own. In contrast, the asteroid impact would have released energy equivalent to billions of nuclear bombs, causing immediate tsunamis, wildfires, and a prolonged 'impact winter' that blocked sunlight for months or years, leading to a collapse of photosynthesis and food chains. Therefore, the evidence strongly favors the asteroid impact as the primary cause, with volcanism playing only a minor or secondary role.
