The extinction of the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America, is often attributed to overhunting by humans in the 19th century. However, a closer examination of the ecological and genetic evidence suggests that the species' demise was not solely due to human predation but was significantly driven by intrinsic biological factors. First, the passenger pigeon exhibited extreme population fluctuations, with massive irruptions followed by dramatic crashes. These natural boom-and-bust cycles, observed before heavy human hunting, indicate that the species was inherently vulnerable to sudden population collapses, possibly due to food scarcity or disease. Second, genetic analyses of museum specimens reveal that the passenger pigeon had remarkably low genetic diversity, despite its enormous population size. This lack of variation would have made the species less adaptable to environmental changes, increasing the risk of extinction when conditions shifted. Third, the passenger pigeon's reproductive strategy was highly dependent on large, dense nesting colonies. This social behavior, while effective in overwhelming predators, became a liability when populations declined, as the birds required a critical mass to breed successfully. Once numbers fell below a threshold, reproduction rates plummeted, accelerating the decline.
