The widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides has been linked to the decline of bee populations, but recent research suggests that these chemicals may also pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. Neonicotinoids are highly water-soluble and persist in soil, leading to runoff into rivers and lakes. Three main concerns emerge from this contamination. First, neonicotinoids are toxic to aquatic invertebrates, such as mayflies and water fleas, at concentrations commonly found in freshwater systems. These organisms form the base of the food web, and their decline could disrupt entire aquatic food chains. Second, neonicotinoids can bioaccumulate in fish tissues, potentially affecting fish health and reproduction. Studies have shown that exposure to sublethal doses reduces growth rates and alters swimming behavior in juvenile salmon, making them more vulnerable to predators. Third, the breakdown products of neonicotinoids, known as metabolites, may be even more persistent and toxic than the parent compounds. For example, desnitro-imidacloprid, a metabolite of imidacloprid, has been detected in water samples months after application and exhibits higher toxicity to aquatic organisms. These findings indicate that neonicotinoids pose a serious, overlooked risk to freshwater environments, warranting stricter regulation.
