The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps eruptions in India, was the primary driver. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions overlaps with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating places the main phase of eruptions at about 66 million years ago, precisely when the dinosaurs disappeared. This temporal correlation suggests a causal link. Second, volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide would have caused severe climate changes, including rapid cooling (volcanic winter) followed by prolonged warming, which could have disrupted ecosystems globally. Such climate fluctuations are consistent with the fossil record showing gradual declines in dinosaur diversity before the impact. Third, the asteroid impact hypothesis fails to explain the selective nature of the extinction—many terrestrial species survived, while others, like dinosaurs, perished. Volcanic activity, by contrast, would have had more widespread and sustained effects on the atmosphere and oceans, affecting different species unevenly but over a longer period, matching the observed patterns.
