📖 Reading Passage

The extinction of the woolly mammoth has long been attributed to overhunting by early humans, a theory known as the 'Pleistocene overkill' hypothesis. Proponents argue that human arrival in North America around 13,000 years ago coincided with a rapid decline in mammoth populations. First, archaeological evidence shows that Clovis spear points, characteristic of early human hunters, are frequently found alongside mammoth remains, suggesting direct predation. Second, the timing of human migration aligns closely with the last known appearance of mammoths on the continent, implying a cause-and-effect relationship. Third, modern studies of island ecosystems, such as Wrangel Island, demonstrate that small mammoth populations persisted long after the main continental extinction, but only until humans arrived there as well, further supporting the idea that human hunting was the decisive factor.
