📖 Đoạn văn

The introduction of non-native species into new environments is often viewed as a threat to biodiversity, but in certain cases, it can yield significant ecological and economic benefits. One such example is the intentional introduction of the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) into North American freshwater systems. Proponents argue that this species offers three major advantages. First, Asian clams are highly efficient filter feeders, capable of removing large amounts of algae and particulate matter from water. This improves water clarity and quality, which benefits aquatic plants and recreational activities. Second, the clams serve as a plentiful and nutritious food source for native fish and bird species, potentially boosting their populations. For instance, studies in the Mississippi River have shown increased growth rates in some fish species that consume Asian clams. Third, the commercial harvesting of Asian clams for the aquarium trade and for human consumption, particularly in Asian cuisine, generates substantial revenue for local fishing communities. This economic incentive can support conservation efforts and provide livelihoods that reduce pressure on overexploited native species. Therefore, rather than viewing all introductions as harmful, we should consider the potential benefits of adaptable species like the Asian clam and manage their spread to maximize positive outcomes.
