The decline of the Mayan civilization has puzzled archaeologists for decades. While many theories exist, a compelling explanation is that a series of severe droughts, exacerbated by deforestation, led to societal collapse. First, paleoclimate data from lake sediments in the Yucatan Peninsula show a clear period of reduced rainfall between 800 and 1000 CE, coinciding with the Classic Maya collapse. This drought would have devastated maize agriculture, the primary food source, leading to famine and social unrest. Second, deforestation for fuel and construction would have amplified the drought's effects. By clearing forests, the Maya reduced local humidity and increased soil erosion, making the land less fertile and more vulnerable to water loss. This environmental degradation would have reduced agricultural yields even during normal rainfall years, creating chronic food shortages. Third, the collapse was not uniform; many lowland cities were abandoned, while some highland centers survived. This pattern aligns with drought severity, as lowland areas have less reliable rainfall and are more sensitive to changes in climate. Highland regions, with their orographic rainfall and cooler temperatures, were better buffered against prolonged dry spells. Thus, the combination of climate change and human environmental impact offers a robust explanation for the rapid decline of this advanced civilization.
