📖 Reading Passage

The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century is often hailed as a revolutionary milestone in human communication. However, its immediate effects on European society were less transformative than commonly assumed. First, the spread of printed books was slow due to high costs and limited literacy. Early printed books were expensive, often priced comparably to manuscripts, because paper and ink were costly and the demand was limited to wealthy elites and institutions. Consequently, the printing press did not rapidly democratize knowledge; literacy rates remained low, with less than 10% of the adult population able to read in most regions by 1500. Second, the content of early printed works was largely conservative, reproducing medieval texts rather than introducing new ideas. Most print runs consisted of religious works, such as indulgences and Bibles, or classical Latin texts, which reinforced existing scholastic traditions. This reliance on familiar content meant that the press initially served to consolidate established authorities rather than challenge them. Third, the printing press did not immediately undermine the power of the Catholic Church; instead, it strengthened it. The Church quickly recognized the potential of print for disseminating propaganda, such as papal bulls and indulgences, and used it to reinforce its spiritual and temporal authority. In fact, the Church’s control over printing, through licensing systems and censorship, was effective in suppressing dissenting voices for decades before the Reformation gained momentum. Thus, while the printing press ultimately changed the world, its immediate impact was muted and conservative.
