The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the eruption of the Deccan Traps in India, was the primary cause. First, volcanic eruptions release vast amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, which can cause rapid climate change. The Deccan Traps eruptions, which lasted for over a million years, would have produced enough greenhouse gases and aerosols to drastically alter global temperatures, leading to a collapse of ecosystems long before any asteroid struck. Second, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating shows that the main phase of volcanic activity began about 66 million years ago, coinciding with the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, whereas the asteroid impact occurred slightly later or at least its effects were not immediate enough to explain the gradual decline seen in fossil records. Third, the fossil record reveals a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity in the million years before the K-Pg boundary, which is more consistent with a slow, ongoing stressor like volcanic activity than with a sudden catastrophic impact. This pattern of decline is observed in many parts of the world, suggesting a global cause that predates the asteroid.
