The practice of assigning homework to primary school students has been a cornerstone of educational systems for decades. However, recent proposals to eliminate homework entirely have gained traction. Proponents of abolition argue that homework provides minimal academic benefit, exacerbates educational inequality, and consumes time that could be spent on family activities. First, research indicates that for young children, the correlation between homework and academic achievement is negligible. A 2015 meta-analysis by Cooper et al. found that for elementary students, the effect size of homework on test scores was near zero, suggesting that time spent on worksheets could be equally spent on other learning activities. Second, homework widens the achievement gap between affluent and disadvantaged students. Children from wealthier families often have access to parental help, private tutors, or educational resources, while those from lower-income households may lack a quiet study space or internet access. This disparity means that homework can penalize students who already face systemic barriers. Third, homework intrudes on essential family time and extracurricular development. After six hours of school, children need physical activity, unstructured play, and family interaction to develop social skills and emotional health. Assigning homework reduces these opportunities, leading to increased stress and burnout even in young learners. Thus, eliminating homework would allow for more equitable, developmentally appropriate, and stress-free learning environments.

Professor's lecture: The reading makes several claims, but they are misleading. First, the meta-analysis mentioned actually shows that while homework has minimal effect on test scores, it significantly improves other important outcomes, such as study habits, time management, and self-discipline. These skills are critical for long-term academic success and are not captured by simple test scores. Second, the argument about inequality is short-sighted. Eliminating homework would not erase the resource gap; it would simply remove a structured opportunity for practice. In fact, schools can mitigate inequality by assigning homework that does not require internet or parental involvement, such as reading a provided book or practicing math facts with flashcards. This ensures all students have equal access to skill reinforcement. Third, the claim about family time overlooks that homework can be designed to involve families positively, for instance, through parent-child reading or simple science experiments. Such activities strengthen family bonds and model lifelong learning. Moreover, unstructured play is important, but homework duration can be limited to 20 minutes for young children, which does not meaningfully reduce playtime. Therefore, the proposal to abolish homework is based on selective evidence and ignores the potential for well-designed, equitable homework.
