📖 Texto de lectura

The extinction of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) at the end of the Pleistocene has long puzzled scientists. While climate change and human hunting are often cited, a recent hypothesis proposes that a catastrophic extraterrestrial impact—a comet or asteroid strike—was the primary driver. This theory rests on three main arguments. First, proponents point to a thin layer of sediment found at many sites across North America and Europe, dating to roughly 12,800 years ago, that contains high concentrations of iridium, a rare element in Earth's crust but common in meteorites. This layer is interpreted as evidence of a large impact event. Second, the same sediment layer contains microscopic spherules and nanodiamonds, which are formed under extreme heat and pressure consistent with an impact. Third, the timing of this proposed impact coincides with the onset of the Younger Dryas, a sudden return to near-glacial conditions that would have drastically altered the mammoth's habitat, reducing its food supply and leading to population collapse. Thus, the impact hypothesis provides a unified explanation for both the mammoth's extinction and the abrupt climate shift.
