The extinction of the passenger pigeon, once the most abundant bird in North America, is often attributed to overhunting and habitat loss. However, recent research suggests that the species' own biology may have played a more critical role. Three intrinsic factors likely contributed to their rapid demise. First, passenger pigeons bred in massive, dense colonies called 'rookeries,' sometimes containing millions of birds. This extreme sociality meant that when populations fell below a certain threshold, breeding success plummeted because the birds required large numbers to stimulate reproduction and protect against predators. Second, the species had a very low reproductive rate: females laid only a single egg per breeding attempt, and they raised only one chick per year. This slow recruitment could not compensate for any sudden increase in mortality, making the population highly vulnerable to external pressures. Third, passenger pigeons were highly specialized feeders, relying almost exclusively on mast crops (acorns and beechnuts) from deciduous forests. When these food sources failed intermittently, the birds were forced to undertake long, erratic migrations in search of food, which often led to starvation and reduced breeding success. These biological constraints, combined with human exploitation, made the passenger pigeon uniquely susceptible to extinction.
