📖 Reading Passage

The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago, has long been a subject of scientific debate. While the asteroid impact theory is widely accepted, a closer examination of the fossil record and geological evidence suggests that massive volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps in present-day India, was the primary driver of this mass extinction. Three main arguments support this volcanic hypothesis. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions overlaps with the extinction event. Radiometric dating indicates that the main phase of volcanic activity began about 66.3 million years ago and lasted for roughly 750,000 years, which brackets the extinction horizon. This prolonged volcanic activity would have released vast amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, leading to severe global cooling followed by long-term warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion—conditions detrimental to life. Second, the fossil record shows a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity well before the asteroid impact. In sedimentary layers dating from 68 to 66 million years ago, paleontologists have observed a decrease in the number of dinosaur species, suggesting that environmental stresses from volcanism were already taking a toll. Third, the Deccan Traps eruptions created extensive lava flows that covered over 500,000 square kilometers, and the associated volcanic gases would have caused ocean acidification, disrupting marine ecosystems. In contrast, the asteroid impact, while catastrophic, was a short-lived event that may have only delivered the final blow to an already vulnerable biosphere.
