The discovery of ancient Mayan civilization has long fascinated archaeologists. One of the most debated topics is the cause of its sudden collapse around 900 AD. While many theories exist, the most widely accepted explanation is that a combination of prolonged drought and unsustainable agricultural practices led to societal collapse. First, paleoclimatological data from lake sediments in the Yucatan Peninsula indicate a series of severe droughts, each lasting decades, coinciding with the period of decline. These droughts would have drastically reduced crop yields, leading to famine and social unrest. Second, the Mayan agricultural system, which relied heavily on slash-and-burn farming and intensive maize cultivation, was likely ecologically fragile. Over time, deforestation and soil erosion would have depleted the land’s fertility, making it impossible to support a dense population. Third, the political structure of Mayan city-states, with their constant warfare and elite competition, may have exacerbated the crisis. Rulers, focused on monumental construction and military campaigns, diverted labor and resources away from adaptive responses to environmental stress, hastening the breakdown of social order.
