📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that intense volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps of India was the primary cause. First, the timing of the Deccan eruptions aligns closely with the extinction event. Radiometric dating shows that the main phase of volcanic activity occurred around 66 million years ago, coinciding with the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, whereas the Chicxulub impact occurred slightly earlier, about 300,000 years before the mass extinction. Second, volcanic emissions would have caused severe environmental stress. The Deccan eruptions released enormous quantities of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, leading to acid rain, global cooling followed by warming, and ocean acidification—all of which could have disrupted ecosystems long before any impact. Third, the fossil record supports a gradual decline. In sediments just below the extinction boundary, paleontologists have found a decrease in dinosaur diversity and abundance, suggesting that dinosaurs were already struggling due to volcanic-induced climate change, not thriving until a sudden impact. Thus, the Deccan volcanism, not the asteroid, was the decisive factor in the dinosaurs' demise.
