The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period, about 66 million years ago, has long been debated. While the asteroid impact theory is widely accepted, a competing hypothesis suggests that massive volcanic eruptions in the Deccan Traps of India were the primary cause. This volcanic theory is supported by three main arguments. First, the Deccan eruptions lasted for approximately 30,000 years, releasing enormous amounts of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. These gases would have caused rapid climate fluctuations, including volcanic winters and greenhouse warming, which could have stressed ecosystems long before the asteroid struck. Second, fossil evidence shows a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity over the last few million years of the Cretaceous, consistent with a slow environmental deterioration caused by volcanism, rather than a sudden catastrophic event. Third, the timing of the most intense volcanic phase, known as the Poladpur eruptions, appears to coincide with the mass extinction horizon in many sedimentary records, suggesting that volcanic activity was the direct trigger of the extinction.
