📖 Reading Passage

The decline of the honeybee population has been a growing concern for ecologists and farmers alike. While many blame pesticides or habitat loss, a less obvious culprit may be the widespread use of managed honeybee colonies for commercial pollination. This practice, though intended to boost crop yields, actually harms wild bee populations and ecosystem health. First, managed colonies compete with wild bees for limited floral resources. When commercial beekeepers place thousands of honeybees in an area, they deplete nectar and pollen, leaving little for native bees, which then suffer reduced reproduction and survival. Second, managed honeybees transmit diseases to wild bees. Pathogens such as deformed wing virus and Nosema ceranae, common in commercial hives, can spill over to wild pollinators, causing colony collapses and population declines in species like bumblebees. Third, the focus on honeybees for pollination services distracts conservation efforts and agricultural practices from protecting wild bee habitats. Since honeybees are efficient generalist pollinators, farmers may rely on them exclusively, leading to monoculture farming and the destruction of wildflower strips and nesting sites that wild bees need. Thus, the very industry designed to support agriculture undermines biodiversity and long-term food security.
