The extinction of the megafauna—large animals such as mammoths, giant sloths, and saber-toothed cats—at the end of the Pleistocene epoch has long puzzled scientists. While many theories exist, the most compelling explanation is overhunting by early humans. First, archaeological evidence shows that human arrival in new regions, such as North America and Australia, closely coincided with the rapid disappearance of megafauna. For example, in North America, the Clovis culture’s distinctive spear points appear in the fossil record at the same time as the extinction of mammoths and other large herbivores. Second, megafauna species were particularly vulnerable to hunting due to their slow reproductive rates and long gestation periods. Even modest levels of hunting could outpace their ability to replace lost individuals, leading to population crashes. Third, ethnographic and historical records of hunter-gatherer societies demonstrate that humans often hunt large animals preferentially, as they provide more meat per kill. This selective pressure would have disproportionately affected big-bodied species, driving them to extinction while smaller animals survived. Therefore, human predation, not climate change, was the primary driver of this mass extinction.
