The introduction of a four-day workweek—where employees work four longer days instead of the traditional five—has been proposed as a solution to improve productivity and well-being. However, this policy is likely to produce more harm than good. First, longer shifts lead to increased fatigue and reduced alertness. Studies show that after eight hours of continuous cognitive work, error rates rise sharply; extending shifts to ten hours would exacerbate this decline, particularly in safety-critical industries like healthcare and aviation, where mistakes can have catastrophic consequences. Second, a compressed schedule reduces the overlap of business hours with clients and partners, harming customer service and collaboration. Many businesses rely on same-day responses and cross-time-zone coordination; with everyone working the same four days, the fifth day becomes a bottleneck, slowing transactions and frustrating clients. Third, the four-day week does not actually improve work-life balance. While employees gain an extra day off, the longer workdays encroach on mornings and evenings, making it harder to attend family events, pursue education, or manage childcare. The purported benefit of a three-day weekend is often consumed by catching up on rest or household chores, leaving workers equally stressed. Thus, despite its appeal, the four-day workweek is an impractical reform that risks employee health, business efficiency, and true quality of life.

The reading's concerns about the four-day workweek are unfounded, as evidence from recent pilots demonstrates clear benefits. First, the claim about fatigue ignores the role of autonomy and reset. In trials, employees chose their start times and took micro-breaks; with control over their schedule, they reported higher energy, and productivity actually increased by 20% because focused work replaced idle time. Moreover, error rates did not rise—they fell, as workers were less interrupted and could engage in deeper work during longer blocks. Second, the issue of reduced client overlap is solvable through flexible rostering. Companies in the trials staggered days off across teams, ensuring coverage from Monday to Friday. For example, a financial firm maintained 95% of its response-time targets by rotating 'off' days, and client satisfaction scores remained stable. Third, the balance argument overlooks the nature of the extra day. In the pilots, employees used the three-day weekend for genuine leisure and family, not just chores, because they had more time to complete errands on weekdays due to shorter commutes on off-peak hours. Surveys showed a 30% drop in burnout and a 15% increase in job satisfaction. Therefore, the four-day week, when implemented thoughtfully, enhances both performance and well-being.
