The widespread use of social media has been linked to a decline in face-to-face communication skills among young adults. Critics argue that platforms like Instagram and TikTok encourage shallow, image-based interactions that replace meaningful conversations. Three key reasons support this concern. First, social media reduces the frequency of in-person contact. Studies show that young adults spend an average of three hours daily on social platforms, leaving less time for physical social gatherings. This shift from real-world to digital interaction may weaken the ability to read nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions and body language. Second, the curated nature of social media promotes superficiality. Users present idealized versions of themselves, avoiding vulnerable or complex topics that are essential for deep interpersonal bonds. As a result, young adults may become accustomed to brief, positive exchanges and struggle with conflict resolution or emotional support in real conversations. Third, algorithmic filtering creates echo chambers. By showing users content that aligns with their existing views, social media limits exposure to diverse perspectives, reducing opportunities for persuasive dialogue and critical thinking. Consequently, young adults may lack the skills to engage in civil debate or consider opposing viewpoints, a cornerstone of effective communication in academic and professional settings.

The reading presents a pessimistic view of social media's impact on communication, but it overlooks several crucial counterpoints. First, while it claims social media reduces face-to-face interaction, recent longitudinal data indicate that social media often supplements, not replaces, in-person contact. Many users coordinate offline meetups through these platforms, and studies show that heavy social media users report similar or even higher levels of offline social activity than non-users. The perceived decline likely stems from generational differences in how socializing is measured, not from actual isolation. Second, the argument that social media promotes superficiality is overly simplistic. In fact, research reveals that many users engage in meaningful self-disclosure online, sharing personal struggles and seeking support. For instance, mental health forums on social media have enabled vulnerable individuals to discuss depression or anxiety—topics they might avoid in face-to-face settings due to stigma. These deep exchanges can strengthen social bonds and improve empathy. Third, the claim about echo chambers is not supported by comprehensive evidence. Algorithms often expose users to diverse content, including opposing views, through shared posts or trending topics. Furthermore, the very nature of social media allows users to follow a wide range of voices, from experts to activists, which can broaden perspectives. Studies show that online discussions, while sometimes heated, can foster more reasoned argumentation when participants are encouraged to provide sources. Thus, the reading’s concerns are not only overstated but also contradicted by real-world observations.
