The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that intense volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps eruptions in India, was the primary cause. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns more precisely with the extinction event. Radioisotopic dating shows that the main phase of volcanic activity began about 66.3 million years ago and lasted for roughly 750,000 years, which brackets the extinction horizon at 66.0 million years ago. In contrast, the Chicxulub impact occurred at 66.04 million years ago, but its effects were short-lived. Second, volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide would have caused severe climate fluctuations, including rapid cooling (volcanic winter) followed by long-term warming, which could have stressed ecosystems globally. Such a pattern matches the fossil record showing gradual declines in dinosaur diversity well before the impact. Third, the Deccan Traps produced enormous volumes of lava—over a million cubic kilometers—and released toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide and mercury, which would have poisoned both terrestrial and marine environments. These cumulative effects, spread over hundreds of thousands of years, are more consistent with the prolonged, stepped extinction pattern observed in sedimentary layers, rather than a sudden, single-event catastrophe.

The lecture challenges the volcanic hypothesis presented in the reading. While the Deccan Traps eruptions were indeed massive, their role in the dinosaur extinction is exaggerated. First, the precise dating of the impact event is now more accurate than the reading suggests. Recent high-precision argon-argon dating places the Chicxulub impact at 66.052 million years ago, with an uncertainty of only 0.008 million years, which exactly coincides with the extinction boundary. In contrast, the Deccan Traps show two distinct phases, and the main phase actually ended about 66.1 million years ago, well before the extinction. This means that the most intense volcanic activity had already ceased when the dinosaurs disappeared. Second, climate modeling shows that volcanic aerosols, though significant, were not enough to cause a global catastrophe. The cooling from sulfur dioxide would have been limited to a few degrees and lasted only decades, not centuries, because volcanic particles settle out quickly. The impact, however, released energy equivalent to 10 billion Hiroshima bombs, generating tsunamis, wildfires, and a global dust cloud that blocked photosynthesis for months. Third, the gradual decline in dinosaur diversity cited in the reading is based on incomplete fossil sampling. Many dinosaur fossils from the last 500,000 years of the Cretaceous are actually rare, and when corrected for sampling bias, the diversity remains stable until the impact. Thus, the impact remains the more plausible trigger for the mass extinction.
