The extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period has long been attributed to a massive asteroid impact. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that volcanic activity, specifically the Deccan Traps in India, was the primary cause. First, the timing of the Deccan Traps eruptions aligns closely with the mass extinction event. Geochemical dating shows that the main phase of volcanic activity occurred just before and around the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary, and the eruptions lasted for hundreds of thousands of years, releasing enormous amounts of lava. This prolonged volcanic activity would have caused severe environmental stress, whereas an asteroid impact is a sudden, single event. Second, volcanic emissions of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide would have led to drastic climate changes, including global cooling from sulfate aerosols and subsequent warming from greenhouse gases. Such climate oscillations could have disrupted ecosystems long before any impact. Finally, the fossil record indicates a gradual decline in dinosaur diversity in the millions of years leading up to the K-Pg boundary, which is more consistent with a slow, ongoing stressor like volcanism rather than a sudden catastrophic impact. While an asteroid impact may have delivered the final blow, the volcanic activity was the primary driver of the extinction.
