The construction of large-scale solar power plants in desert regions has been proposed as a key solution to global energy demands. While this approach seems environmentally friendly, three major concerns undermine its viability. First, desert solar farms require vast amounts of water for cleaning and cooling solar panels, especially in arid regions where water is already scarce. For example, a typical concentrated solar power plant can consume up to 20,000 gallons of water per megawatt-hour, straining local water supplies. Second, the installation of solar panels disrupts fragile desert ecosystems. The ground disturbance and shading from panels alter soil temperatures and microclimates, harming native species such as desert tortoises and certain plant communities that rely on specific thermal conditions. Finally, the intermittent nature of solar energy—due to nighttime and cloudy weather—demands expensive energy storage systems or backup fossil fuel plants. These additional costs and infrastructure requirements reduce the economic appeal of desert solar projects, making them less competitive compared to other renewable sources like offshore wind.
