📖 읽기 지문

The construction of large-scale solar power plants in desert regions is often hailed as a key solution to global energy demands. However, this approach has significant drawbacks that make it less viable than commonly assumed. First, desert solar farms require enormous amounts of water for cleaning and cooling the solar panels. In arid environments, water is scarce, and diverting it from local ecosystems and communities could lead to severe shortages. For example, the Ivanpah Solar facility in California has been criticized for using millions of gallons of water annually. Second, the remote location of deserts necessitates long-distance transmission lines, which are costly to build and maintain. Energy losses during transmission over hundreds of kilometers can be as high as 10-15%, reducing overall efficiency and increasing costs. Third, desert solar farms disrupt fragile desert ecosystems. Construction and maintenance activities destroy habitats of endemic species, such as the desert tortoise, and the large land areas required can fragment wildlife corridors. These ecological impacts are often irreversible, undermining the very environmental benefits solar energy is supposed to provide. Therefore, despite the abundant sunlight, desert solar power plants present serious practical and environmental challenges.
