The extinction of the passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) in the early 20th century is often attributed solely to overhunting by humans. However, a closer examination of the species' biology and ecological context suggests that its demise was inevitable due to intrinsic factors. First, the passenger pigeon exhibited extreme social dependency. It nested in colonies of millions, and this dense aggregation was essential for successful breeding. Individuals required the presence of large numbers to stimulate reproductive behavior; when populations dwindled, breeding success plummeted, leading to a rapid decline even without direct hunting pressure. Second, the species had a highly specialized diet, primarily feeding on mast (acorns and beechnuts) from deciduous forests. This food source was unpredictable, with boom-and-bust cycles. Pigeons evolved to track these mast years by moving in huge flocks, but this strategy failed when forest fragmentation reduced the availability of large, contiguous mast-producing areas. As habitat became patchy, the birds could not find sufficient food to sustain large flocks, causing malnutrition and reduced fecundity. Third, genetic evidence suggests that passenger pigeons had low genetic diversity, making them vulnerable to diseases and environmental changes. A study of mitochondrial DNA from museum specimens revealed a lack of variation, indicating a long history of small effective population size. This genetic uniformity would have hindered their ability to adapt to new pathogens or shifting climates, contributing to their extinction even if human interference had been minimal.
